EcoAir's DD3 Slimline is a desiccant dehumidifier for homes that stay cold: unheated bedrooms, conservatories, garages and holiday lets. Rather than a compressor, it uses a desiccant wheel, which the listing says extracts moisture at temperatures as low as 1 °C. It pairs that with a full set of convenience features, from a humidity sensor and automatic restart to a drainage hose, in a body that weighs 6.8 kg.

In its favour

  • The humidity sensor turns it off at your setting and on again when humidity rises.
  • Automatic restart is listed, so it resumes after a power cut.
  • Desiccant extraction down to 1 °C suits cold bedrooms with streaming windows.

Good to know

  • 10 litres a day is less than the compressor models in a warm house.
  • The 1 m hose is short, so it must sit near a drain point.

Our take

Why desiccant matters in a cold house

Compressor dehumidifiers lose effectiveness as rooms get colder, which is when condensation is at its worst. A desiccant unit does not rely on a cold coil, so EcoAir can quote up to 10 litres a day even in near freezing conditions. In a warm living room, a 20 litre compressor model will extract more, but in a north facing bedroom in January the gap narrows.

The listing also gives an upper rating of 40 °C and recommends the unit for homes of two to five bedrooms up to 85 square metres.

Controls and features

The humidity sensor lets you set a target, switching the unit off once it is met and back on when humidity rises. A timer offers 2, 4, 8 or 12 hour settings, there is a laundry mode, and an automatic louvre swings the airflow in any direction. Automatic restart after a power cut is listed in the specifications.

Quiet mode is rated at 39 dB(A), and tilt over and full tank shut off are included for safety.

Tank, hose and upkeep

Water collects in a 3 litre tank, or you can attach the supplied 1 metre hose for continuous drainage. A metre is short, so the unit needs to sit near a sink, shower tray or floor drain to use it. The washable antibacterial filter is said to kill bacteria on contact and should be rinsed regularly. The wattage is listed at 370 W, typical for desiccant technology, which uses heat in the process.

Against the De'Longhi DEX210SF and EcoAir DD128

The De'Longhi DEX210SF is a compressor unit with a similar 10 litre rating and a quieter 37 dB claim, but it is suited to heated rooms. The EcoAir DD128 is a smaller 8 litre desiccant sibling with a 3D louvre and ioniser. The DD3 gives more capacity than the DD128 with the same cold weather strengths.

Verdict

Choose the DD3 Slimline for a cold, condensation prone home or outbuilding where a compressor would struggle, and where automatic restart and a hose are useful. For warm rooms, a compressor such as the De'Longhi DEX210SF extracts more efficiently, and if you only need to treat one small room, the lighter EcoAir DD128 may be enough.
