**In short:** Meaco uses different codes on different models, so the manual for your exact model is the only reliable key. The most common warnings are a full or badly seated tank, a defrost indicator in cold rooms and sensor fault codes. Start by unplugging for a few minutes, reseating the tank and cleaning the filter. If a code returns straight away after a reset, contact Meaco or your retailer.

Meaco makes several families of dehumidifier, from the small DD8L desiccant models to the Arete compressor range, and each has its own display and code list. That means a code such as E1 or L2 can mean different things on different machines. This guide explains the warnings that work the same way across most models, the first fixes that are safe to try, and how to tell a simple reset from a job for Meaco's service team. Keep your model number to hand: it is on the rating label, usually on the back or underneath.

## Find the right manual first

Before reading anything into a code, find the manual for your exact model. Meaco publishes manuals for current and many older models on its website, and the model name is printed on the rating label. Codes are not shared across the range, so a list written for one machine can send you the wrong way on another.

If you cannot find the code in the manual, note it exactly as shown, including any letters, numbers and flashing lights, and contact Meaco support with the model and serial number. Do not guess at internal repairs.

1. Read the model and serial number from the rating label.
2. Download the manual for that model from Meaco's website.
3. Look up the code or light in the troubleshooting table.
4. Try the first fix listed, then contact support if it returns.

## Tank full or tank light on

The most common warning on any dehumidifier is the tank light. On most Meaco models it comes on when the tank is full, when the tank is not pushed fully home, or when the float inside the tank is stuck in the raised position. The machine stops extracting until the problem is cleared, which is why a red or flashing light often comes with the unit seeming to stop working.

Empty the tank, check the float moves up and down freely, wipe it clean and refit the tank until it sits square. If you use a continuous drain hose, check the manual for how the tank or drain plug needs to be set, because some models need a bung removed or a hose fitted in a particular way.

- Tank emptied and dry around the seat
- Float moves freely
- Tank pushed fully home
- Drain hose fitted as the manual shows

## Defrost indicators and cold rooms

Compressor dehumidifiers such as the Arete range can frost their coils in a cool room, so they run a defrost cycle and many show a defrost indicator while they do it. During defrost the compressor stops and little or no water is collected. That is normal behaviour, not a fault, and it becomes more frequent as the room gets colder.

If defrost seems to run constantly, the room may be too cold for a compressor model, or the filter may be blocked. Clean the filter and check the room temperature. Desiccant models such as the DD8L use a heated wheel instead of a cold coil, so they do not need to defrost in the same way. Our article on [why dehumidifiers ice up](https://dampanddry.co.uk/blog/dehumidifier-icing-up) explains the cause.

## E codes and sensor faults

On many dehumidifiers from many brands, codes that start with E point to a sensor or electronics fault, for example a humidity sensor or a coil temperature sensor that is reading out of range. Meaco's exact meanings vary by model, so check your manual before assuming which sensor is involved.

A safe first step for any E code is a power reset. Switch off, unplug for five to ten minutes, then plug back in and restart. A sensor can briefly read out of range after a big temperature change, for example when a machine is moved from a cold car into a warm room. If the code comes back straight away, or within a few minutes of running, the part probably needs replacing and that is a job for Meaco or an authorised repairer.

Note: Do not open the casing to inspect sensors or wiring. Unplug the unit before cleaning, and leave internal repairs to the maker or a qualified technician.

## Other letter codes such as L2, and humidity displays

Some Meaco displays show letter and number combinations that are not fault codes at all, such as a setting, a timer step or a mode. Others are warnings. Because these differ between models, the manual is the only reliable source. If you see L2 or another code that is not in your manual, contact Meaco support with a photo of the display.

Many dehumidifiers also show LO or HI when the measured humidity is outside the range the sensor displays. That is a reading, not a fault. Meaco's own manual for your model will confirm what its display shows at the extremes.

## Meaco dehumidifier not turning on

If the display stays blank, check the simple things first. Try another socket you know works. Check the plug fuse, which in the UK is a cartridge fuse in the plug top, and replace it only with the rating printed on the plug or in the manual. Make sure the tank is fitted, as some models will not start with the tank out.

Some models also wait a few minutes before the compressor restarts after being switched off, to protect it. The fan may run while the compressor waits. If nothing at all happens with a good socket and fuse, the power supply board or switch may have failed, and the unit needs a repair.

## When to book a repair or replacement

Book a repair if a fault code returns after a reset, if the compressor never starts in a warm humid room, or if you notice a burning smell, buzzing or tripping electrics. Stop using the unit in the last two cases. Check your warranty before paying for anything, as Meaco offers extended warranties on some models when registered.

If the machine is old and out of warranty, compare repair quotes with the cost of a new one. ## Frequently asked questions

**What does the red light mean on a Meaco dehumidifier?** On most models it is a tank warning: the tank is full, not seated properly, or the float is stuck. Empty and refit the tank. If it stays on, check the manual for your model.

**What does E1 mean on a Meaco dehumidifier?** On many dehumidifiers E codes point to a sensor fault, but the exact meaning varies by Meaco model. Reset the unit by unplugging it, and if E1 returns, check the manual and contact Meaco support.

**Why does my Meaco keep going into defrost?** The room is probably cool, or the filter is blocked. Clean the filter and check the temperature. Compressor models defrost more often below about 15 °C.

**Can I reset a Meaco dehumidifier?** Yes. Switch off, unplug for five to ten minutes, then restart. This clears many temporary warnings. A code that returns straight away needs a repair.
